What is CBAM?

The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is a policy initiative adopted by the European Union, aimed primarily at combating “carbon leakage.” This term refers to the tendency of companies to relocate production outside the EU to countries with less stringent environmental regulations in order to avoid the costs associated with reducing CO2 emissions.

CBAM introduces tariffs on imports of certain products from sectors such as steel and iron, cement, aluminum, fertilizers, and electricity, calculating these tariffs based on the CO2 emissions generated during the production process of these goods in their countries of origin. By applying these tariffs, the EU aims to encourage adherence to strict carbon emission standards globally while ensuring fair competition for European industries, which face higher costs for reducing emissions.
