CBAM Tax for Importers
CBAM has become one of the most important compliance obligations for companies importing into the European Union products from sectors with high carbon emissions. The mechanism applies to imports of cement, iron and steel, aluminium, fertilisers, hydrogen and electricity, as well as certain derivative products included in European legislation.
For companies, CBAM is no longer just a reporting obligation. With the definitive regime, importers must manage a complete compliance process: verifying imported products, collecting data from suppliers, calculating embedded emissions, reporting in the CBAM Registry, and preparing for the purchase and surrender of CBAM certificates.
CBAM Tax
The CBAM Tax represents the cost associated with the carbon emissions embedded in certain products imported into the European Union. Its purpose is to ensure fair treatment between European producers, who pay emission-related costs through the EU ETS system, and importers of products manufactured outside the European Union.
In practice, the CBAM Tax does not function as a traditional customs duty, but through the obligation to purchase and surrender CBAM certificates, calculated according to the embedded emissions of the imported products. The final cost depends on the quantity imported, the emissions intensity of the product, the data provided by the producer, and the price of CBAM certificates.
For importers, it is essential that emissions data is correctly collected from suppliers and reported in accordance with European requirements. Incomplete or incorrect reporting may lead to administrative risks, additional costs and difficulties in the compliance process.
