Renewable Energy

Many countries have established schemes to promote renewable energy consumption and projects.

Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) are tradable, certificates that represent proof that one megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity was generated from a renewable energy source, such as wind, solar, or hydro.

In Europe, several schemes require or encourage the use of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) to promote the generation and consumption of renewable energy. These schemes are integral to achieving the EU’s ambitious climate and energy targets.

Guarantees of Origin (GO)

The Guarantees of Origin (GO) system, mandated by the EU Renewable Energy Directive, is the primary mechanism for tracking and verifying the origin of renewable energy in Europe. GOs certify that a given amount of electricity has been produced from renewable sources, ensuring transparency and consumer confidence in green energy purchases.

Renewable Energy Directive (RED II)

The updated Renewable Energy Directive (RED II), effective from July 1, 2021, sets a binding target of at least 32% renewable energy in the EU’s overall energy mix by 2030. It requires Member States to establish mechanisms to ensure that renewable energy is promoted and tracked, often utilizing RECs to demonstrate compliance.

Corporate Renewable Energy Sourcing

Many European companies are increasingly committing to sourcing their energy from renewable sources, often through Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) coupled with RECs. This trend is driven by corporate sustainability goals and the need to meet regulatory requirements.
